The 3-Product Rule: Why Promoting Fewer Things Makes You More Money

Every beginner tries to promote everything. The ones who actually earn a living pick three products and go deep. Here's why — and how to choose yours.

The math nobody explains

If you promote 30 different products across a year, you write 30 different 'here's why I recommend this' stories, learn 30 different affiliate dashboards, and confuse 30 different segments of your list. If you promote 3 products, you get 12 chances per product to refine your story, earn the reader's trust, and become the go-to recommender for that category. Same effort. Radically different outcome.

The three roles every affiliate portfolio needs

  • The Gateway. Something under $50 that solves the reader's most obvious first problem. Low commission, high volume, warms up your list to the idea of buying anything you recommend.
  • The Workhorse. Something $50–$300 that solves the reader's real second problem. Middle commission, moderate volume, this is where most of your monthly income actually comes from.
  • The Anchor. Something $300+ that solves the reader's biggest structural problem. Higher commission per sale, lower volume, but the trust required to sell it also raises the value of everything else you recommend.

How to pick each role

Start with the Gateway. It's the fastest to earn on and the hardest to get wrong. Then pick the Workhorse based on what your Gateway buyers ask you about next. Wait 90 days before picking the Anchor — you need real feedback from your buyers before you commit to a big-ticket recommendation.

The temptation you must resist

Someone will pitch you an amazing new product with a 60% commission next week. Every week. Forever. If it doesn't map cleanly onto one of your three roles, the right answer is a polite 'no thanks' — even if it's a great product. The strength of a portfolio is discipline, not variety.

When to add a fourth product

Never — until your three current products together have earned you at least six months of steady income. At that point you have earned the right to experiment. Before that point, a fourth product is just a distraction wearing an opportunity costume.
