The Only Three Numbers a Beginner Affiliate Should Track
Google Analytics has a thousand dials. You need three. Track these, ignore the rest, and your first six months will make sense.

Why beginner marketers drown in dashboards
Google Analytics, your email tool, your affiliate dashboard, your social platform, and Stripe all beg for your attention. Ninety percent of what they show you is noise for a brand-new operator. The real question is never 'What can I measure?' — it's 'What decision will this number cause me to make?' If a number doesn't inform a decision, it's decoration.
Number 1 — New subscribers per week
This is the top of your funnel. If subscribers per week is trending up, whatever you're doing on traffic is working — keep doing it. If it's flat for three weeks, your traffic tactic has stopped compounding. Change the tactic, not the funnel.
Number 2 — Open rate on your welcome email
This tells you two things at once — whether your subject line matches your landing page promise, and whether the email is landing in the inbox versus the promotions tab. If open rate on the welcome is below 40%, one of those two things is broken. Fix them in that order.
Number 3 — Clicks from your recommendation email to the affiliate product page
This is the closest lagging indicator to revenue you can watch. It skips the noise of impressions, hovers, and 'engagement' entirely and asks the only honest question: did the reader take the action that could earn you a dollar? If click-through on your recommendation email is below 5%, either the product-audience match is wrong, or the pitch in that email is buried.
What to ignore for the first 90 days
- Bounce rate on your landing page. It's meaningless for single-page funnels.
- Time on page. A reader deciding in 8 seconds to give you their email is a better signal than a reader lingering for 3 minutes and leaving.
- Social share counts. They flatter your ego and predict nothing about revenue.
- Any 'engagement score' invented by a marketing tool. If the tool made up the metric, the tool cannot be objective about it.
The weekly 15-minute analytics ritual
Every Sunday, spend 15 minutes writing down the three numbers, and one sentence about what changed week-on-week. That's the whole practice. Numbers without a written interpretation drift into wallpaper. Interpretations without numbers drift into wishful thinking.
